Improv at its best
I am proud that my first review on archive.org will be for this amazing show. This was night four of a five night residency from Dave Harrington at Threes Brewing, located in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn. Each night had two sets, often with a different lineup of musicians each set. This night was Dave Harrington's Merry Pranksters- first set had Dave, Nels Cline (!!!), Yuka Honda, Jeremy Gustin, Spencer Zahn, Kenny Wolleson, and Mauro Refosco. The second set was the same band, joined by Stuart Bogie and Briggan Krauss on horns.
First thing I'll say is that this recording is excellent- this was in a tiny room that was packed, with people pouring out the doors. Many of the instruments were not mic'd through the house. But the recording captures everything, and the nuances of the playing help contribute to what makes this show so special.
This is a clinic in listening- whether it was 7 or 9 musicians up there, no one overplayed- everyone found their place to fit in with the music. Every "song" is patient as it finds itself. At one point in the second set (I think it comes in track 6) is this beautiful interplay between Harrington and Nels where they are both playing lead lines that fit together perfectly, even though they're fundamentally different. And the drums, percussion, and bass provide so much support for everything going on around them.
Give this show a listen. Please. It deserves to be heard.
